A large rural parish, much of the land is agricultural with some marshland, where it meets the Wantsum Channel, the ancient waterway separating the Isle of Thanet from the Kentish mainland.
The name derives from the old English word Cistelet, meaning a chestnut copse. The church of St Mary The Virgin at the centre of Chislet, dates back to the 12th century.
